How to Mute and Unmute Someone on Instagram

Instagram is a great platform where people see each other’s posts, stories, videos, and more. But you may feel it sometimes to ignore or mute someone instead of unfollowing them. Well, it’s your good luck, Instagram allows users to mute and unmute someone’s account whenever they want.

There are a few things you need to know before muting someone’s account or their stories and posts on Instagram. The best thing about this feature is the person may never know you have actually muted their posts and stories.

However, when you change your mind you can get back unmute that person. Guess what? They will never know. It is the same feature as we have on Facebook Messenger called ignore messages.

How to Mute Someone on Instagram

The procedure is very simple and straightforward. All you need is to update your application if it is not. Because the screenshot provided below has been taken in the latest app, that way you won’t experience any troubles while doing so. To mute someone’s account, their post, or stories:

1. Open Instagram.
2. Tap on the person’s profile picture on your feed.
3. Now tap Following and then Mute.
4. You have two options to mute the posts only or stories or both. The choice is yours.
5. Tap the toggle to Mute the person and you are good to go.

That is you have successfully muted someone’s account, their stories, and posts on Instagram in 2020. However, we are humans, right? and we may change our time we don’t know. What if you want to unmute them later on? You can do it don’t worry.

How to Mute Someone’s Posts on IG

You are totally independent while choosing to mute someone’s post only. You can do it while muting a person on IG, here is how to do it:

1. Open your feed on the IG app.
2. To mute someone’s post only hit the three vertical dots option at the top of his post.
3. Now tap the Mute option then Mute Posts only, that is it.

You won’t see any posts from that person on your IG feed. However, you can follow the below procedure to unmute someone’s posts anytime you want. Have a look at the above screenshots for your reference.

Alternatively, you can go to the person’s profile, and tap the Following option under the name. After choosing the Mute option, then select the Posts Toggle to be enabled. Don’t tap the Stories toggle, this will mute the Stories too, that is it you are good to go. You successfully muted someone’s posts only on IG.

How to Mute Someone’s Stories on IG

You can choose to mute someone’s story only on Instagram with ease. The choice is totally yours. Here is how to do it:

1. On your IG feed, tap and hold someone’s story.
2. Tap the Mute option then Mute Story, that is it.
3. Select Mute Story and Posts on the confirmation popup screen.

In the future, if ever change your mind, you can get into the Mute accounts list and unmute stories from that person with ease. Here is how to do it: Get into the profile section of yours, then Menu, Settings, Privacy, and Mute Account. Find that account there and unmute their stories.

Why can’t I mute someone on Instagram?

There might be lots of reasons if you are not able or can’t mute someone. Some of them are:

• Your Instagram app is not up to date.
• You have been blocked.
• It could be a bug and you can try later.
• Try to restart the app and if possible try to restart your phone as well.
• The feature is not available in your desired country or area.
• Clear your phone’s cookies and caches.
• Uninstall and then reinstall the app.
• You have been ignored or muted too (not confirmed).

All the above-mentioned reasons are what I personally assume that they could be. However, the feature is available to me, and it’s working perfectly. Moreover, Instagram did not get rid of the mute feature yet.

What happens when you mute someone on Instagram

What does mute on Instagram mean: When you mute certain followers on Instagram you are actually avoiding/hiding them completely. Their posts, stories, and other things they are sharing won’t be popular on your feed anymore. The person’s account will be available in the muted accounts list in your settings.

As per Instagram and its facts, they will never that they have been muted. You might get several notifications when the muted person tags you in various posts and comments or mentions.

Yet, you can still send a message to that person without knowing you have actually muted him or her. This is the best thing as far as I know. This feature is only on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, you won’t be to do so until you unignore that person.

How to Unmute Someone on Instagram

Instagram allows users to unmute their muted ones with ease. It doesn’t require any rocket science but an updated Instagram app. To unmute someone, their stories or posts:

1. Go ahead and open Instagram.
2. Tap your account icon available at the bottom right of the screen.
3. Now tap the Menu (three lines) at the top right and then Settings.
4. Tap Privacy then Muted Accounts under Connections.
5. Now you need to tap the person you wanna unmute then Following.
6. Tap Mute and disable the toggles to unmute stories, posts, or both to completely unmute the person’s account.

That is all, you have successfully unmuted or undo ignored accounts on your Instagram app. Most people call this feature an alternative to hiding and unhiding someone.

Can you still mute on Instagram 2023?

The short answer is Yes you can still mute and unmute followers on Instagram in 2023. We still have two options either to hide someone’s posts or stories or both. They didn’t delete this feature on it may not be available in a couple of areas. This is because most of my blog visitors are telling me that it is not available and it’s gone.

How to tell if you’ve been muted on Instagram?

It’s quite simple to know if you have been muted or ignored. For example, if it has been more than the usual time period you haven’t seen someone post or story, you have been ignored or muted.

Try to have a look at that account from a friend’s Instagram if he/she is posting regularly or not. If he/she is posting and uploading stories, then you know what I mean.

When you mute someone on IG, can they still see your posts?

Instagram won’t tell anyone that you have muted them on your account. Thus they are not getting any notification for that. Moreover, if you think you can’t see your posts, you are wrong. They can’t see your posts but the only thing is, you have to mute them only on your side. I hope this clarifies everything.

However, if you wanna mute someone just because to not see your posts. Muting doesn’t actually work for that, you will need to block them to stop them from seeing your posts. Alternatively, you can make your account private. But even in the private accounts of the existing posts, they will see them all. They won’t see the new ones.

Why would you mute someone on IG?

At a certain point, you may wanna mute someone on IG. Because the reason could be any. They are posting too much, uploading content you don’t like, you don’t wanna see their posts anymore but don’t wanna block them too.

Also, there is something compromising your privacy and many more reasons that you would block someone. But the most common I see is that people don’t wanna block someone, because they will know. However, muting someone doesn’t let them know anything and you have silently done the thing.

Can I tell if someone mutes me on IG?

Absolutely not, because Instagram never lets you or another person mute each other. There is no way to tell if someone mutes on your Instagram but you can guess if you don’t see someone posts, stories, uploads, etc for long and his account is active. Still, if you don’t see his post and updates from before then consider someone muting you on the IG platform.

An alternate way to find out is to ask your friend to help. Give one of your IG friends that person’s username and tell him if he can see that person’s posts, stories, uploaded, etc. If your friend can see those things. Then it’s confirmed that the person muted you.

It is a feature available to each user and everyone has the right to use it or not. Moreover, it is perfect when you are tired of somebody’s annoying post and story and wanna get rid of that. One of the best and my favorite things is, that Instagram never notified me or you that we have been muted or ignored.
